Dr. Ricardo Uauy
Member
Dr. Ricardo Uauy is board certified in pediatrics, neonatology, and perinatology. He is currently a professor of public health nutrition at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. During part of his tenure with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, he served as the University Regional Coordinator for Latin America with the United Nations’ Food and Nutrition Program. He received his medical degree from the University of Chile and doctoral degree in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism and international nutrition planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Dr. Uauy has also worked at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA) at the University of Chile. He headed up both the institute’s Clinical Nutrition Unit and Human Nutrition Area and its Training Programs. He was recognized for his leadership and commitment to nutrition and the INTA mission, and promoted to Director, a position he held until accepting the professorship at the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Uauy started his career at INTA as the Director of the Clinical Research Center. He continues to hold a professorship in nutrition and pediatrics at the University of Chile.
Other positions include nutrition advisor to UN organizations and other international organizations; Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Human Nutrition Center of the University of Texas’ Southwestern Medical Center; Attending Physician in Neonatology at Parkland Memorial Hospital and St. Paul Hospital in Dallas, Texas; Visiting Associate Professor in Pediatrics at Yale University; Attending Physician in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit of Yale New Haven Hospital; Fellow in Neonatology at Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital,; Resident Coordinator and Program Assistant for the World Hunger Program at the United Nations University in Santiago, Chile and Cambridge, Massachusetts respectively; Research Associate in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Resident and Interns in Pediatrics at the Harvard University Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Uauy has also served on the board and task forces of various health and nutrition organizations.
In recognition for his leadership, significant contributions, and dedication to international nutrition and research particularly in the area of childhood obesity, he has received many honors, such as the 2005 Award of the Spanish Nutrition Society for International Nutrition, the 2005 Abraham Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health, the 2006 Kellogg International Nutrition Research Award, and the 2007 Gopalan Gold Medal Oration Award from the Nutrition Foundation of India.
Dr. Uauy joined the board of the Pan America Health and Education Foundation in 2008.
