“Our goal must be a world in which good health is a pillar of individual well-being, national progress, and international stability and peace. This cannot be achieved without partnerships involving governments, international organizations, the business community, and civil society.”

— Kofi A. Annan, ex-Secretary-General of the United Nations

Dr. Frederick Naftolin is currently serving as Director of Biology Research and is on the obstetrics/gynecology faculty of the School of Medicine at New York University. Prior to this, he enjoyed a 25 year-career at the Yale University School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1978-2003). He served in many capacities ranging from professor, to chairman, to director of the Center for Research in Reproductive Biology, to head of the Reproductive Neuroscience Unit. He also was a professor, a joint appointment with Yale University’s Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. During 1982-1983 while chairing the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Naftolin was an invited member of the medical faculty of the University of Geneva, Switzerland.

Prior to joining the faculty of Yale University, Dr. Naftolin was the chief obstetrician and gynecologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital as well as chairman and professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGill University, both in Montreal, Canada.

Upon graduation from the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, Dr. Naftolin continued his medical training at King County Hospital in Seattle, UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, University of Washington in Seattle, and University of Oxford in England. After receiving his Doctorate of Philosophy, he accepted professor positions in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, San Diego, and Harvard Medical School.

In recognition for his significant contributions and dedication to training and career development of researchers in the field of reproductive and women's health, the Society for Gynecologic Investigation (SGI) established the Frederick Naftolin Award for Mentorship to honor Dr. Naftolin. He served as SGI president during 1991-1992.

McGill University established the Frederick Naftolin Fellowship in Reproductive Health in 1998. It supports graduate physicians or scientists pursuing a career in reproductive medicine.

Dr. Naftolin joined the board of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation in November 2005.

He joined the board because of a long interest in health care in Latin America. “There are many things that the United States can and should be doing to assure the economic progress and health of our southern neighbors. Everyone should do what they can in this effort. This is especially true in these days when our relationships are more and more tightly entwined.”

Dr. Naftolin signed a conflict of interest statement and agrees to abide by PAHEF's conflict of interest policy.
