Brazilian Student Receives the 2007 Pedro N. Acha Award for Veterinary Public Health

On November 23, 2007 in Brazil , the Pedro N. Acha Award for Veterinary Public Health was presented to Mr. Robson Bruniera de Oliveira, a student with the School of Veterinary Medicine , Federal University of Vicosa in Minas Gerais State at an official ceremony at the Seventh EXPOEPI (National Sample of Successful Experiences in Epidemiology, Disease Prevention, and Control). This award is granted annually to a student in veterinary medicine and animal sciences who has written a thesis about their veterinary public health research in Latin America and the Caribbean . The Acha Award is one of five awards of the Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, a joint program of the Pan American Health Organization and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF).

Dr. Rubén Figueroa, interim Representative of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) office in Brazil , presented the award to the winner who thanked PAHEF and PAHO for recognizing students of veterinary medicine with this distinction. Also participating in the ceremony were Dr. Fabiano Pimenta representing the Secretary of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health; Professor Paula Belivacqua of the Federal University of Viçosa; Dr. Mauro Elkhoury, PAHO/WHO National Advisor of Veterinary Public Health; and distinguished representatives of national professional associations and educational institutions devoted to veterinary public health in Brazil .

The award ceremony was carried out in partnership with the Secretary of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of the Health that had the participation of over 1,600 health professionals of Brazil and of representatives of the other countries of the Americas .
