MEXFAM receives the 2006 Clarence H. Moore Award for Voluntary Service

On January 25, 2007, Dr. Carlos Welti Chanes, President of Fundacion Mexicana para la Planeación Familiar (MEXFAM), received the 2006 Clarence H. Moore Award for Voluntary Service at the ceremony held at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization, the World Health Organization’s Regional Office of the Americas (PAHO/WHO) in Mexico City, Mexico.

On behalf of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation, the PAHO/WHO interim representative, Dr. Jacobo Finkelman, presented a certificate of honor and a cash award for US$ 2.500 to Dr. Carlos Welti Chanes. Upon delivering the Award, which for the first time in 16 years is granted to an organization in Mexico, Dr. Jacobo Finkelman commented that MEXFAM "represents one of the best institutions of civil society of the country."

MEXFAM is a civil association that for 40 years has worked to guarantee the basic human rights of the population: to have access to the health services. MEXFAM also promotes a comprehensive health models, the sexual and health rights reproductive of the Mexicans, including subjects of equality and gender equity, as well as elimination of violence. During 2005, MEXFAM carried out 134 projects in different States of Mexico and in the capital city. MEXFAM has 2,500 volunteers and has presence in 24 Mexican States.

The Director of External Relation of the Secretary of Health, Lic. Alejandra Morel recognized the achievements of MEXFAM in the reduction of cultural, religious, social, economic, political, and legal barriers between people of limited resources.

The Clarence H. Moore Award for Voluntary Service recognizes the achievements and outstanding contributions of nongovernmental volunteer or private, national or local organizations in the area of public health in Latin America or the Caribbean.
