Proyecto Aldea Global from Tegucigalpa, Honduras receives the Clarence H. Moore Award 2005

On March 9, 2006, Mr. Chester Thomas, Executive Director of the Global Village Project (PAG), received the 2005 Clarence H. Moore Award for Voluntary Service at a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization, the World Health Organization’s Regional Office of the Americas (PAHO/WHO) in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

PAG is a nongovernmental organization that works in 14 counties of Comayagua, Santa Cruz of Yojoa, Ocotepeque and in urban neighborhoods of Tegucigalpa. Its programs include microcredit programs, a fellowship program for children and low-income youth, and an extensive pharmaceutical network to provide medications to those in need. In 400 communities, PAG’s 640 trained community volunteers are front-line health care providers who conduct pre- and postnatal health check-ups, monitor infant growth and development, care for those with HIV/AIDS, and address emergencies as they arise. This community health program is self-sustaining and serves as a model throughout the region.

Mr. Thomas upon receiving the award said: "Today I accept this Clarence Moore Award on behalf of all the private development organizations that work with community health programs, the thousands of volunteers and volunteers who work hard to provide health to its neighbors and its communities. They are the local heroes who believe in Honduras and in their own capacity to solve health problems locally. Today we are accepting this Clarence H. Moore Award of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and PAHO on behalf of all those Hondurans who provide community health in their communities."

On behalf of the Pan American Foundation of Health and Education, Dr. José Fiusa Lima, the PAHO/WHO and Dr. Anibal Fúnez, Vice Minister of Health, presented Mr. Thomas a certificate of honor and a cash award to Mr. Thomas. Dr. José Fiusa Lima noted that this award is an internationally recognized award that is a source of honor for Honduras. He hailed PAG as an organization that works in rural areas with excluded populations. The Vice Minister of Health, Dr. Anibal Fúnez, was happy that PAG is being recognized for its work. He noted that PAG is an organization that works with the community for the good of the health of Hondurans, "we need community participation, we should all commit to working for our health”.

The Clarence H. Moore Award for Voluntary Service recognizes the achievements and outstanding contributions of nongovernmental volunteer or private, national or local organizations in the area of public health in Latin America or the Caribbean.
