WASHINGTON DC (April 25, 2011) - On the occasion of World Malaria Day, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the George Washington University Center for Global Health (CGH) commence this year’s search for the Malaria Champions of the Americas. Currently on its third year, the annual search honors innovative efforts that have significantly contributed towards overcoming the challenges of malaria in communities, countries, or the Region.

PAHEF Celebrates World Health Day

world-health-day-2On April 7, PAHEF participated in the Pan American Health Organization’s celebration of World Health Day in Washington, DC. The 2011 theme was “Combat Drug Resistance: No action today, No cure tomorrow,” which highlighted the world-wide problem of antimicrobial resistance to medications.

Regarding the theme, Edward L. Kadunc, president of PAHEF, remarked, “Drug-resistance claims patients’ lives and places an immense burden on health care systems. As part of PAHEF’s commitment to improving health and health education in the Americas, we fully support efforts to raise awareness of and find solutions to this serious medical issue.”

Conference Highlights Mexico’s Leadership in Biotechnology and Cancer Matters

MEXICO D.F. (March 17, 2011) – ABC Medical Center, its medical association, and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), have joined efforts to implement the workshop "The ABCs of Biotechnology." This synergy arises from the need to educate and deepen knowledge among health professionals directly involved with patients about the impact of biotechnology on human health and to demonstrate Mexico's leadership in the field.

WASHINGTON, DC (March 4, 2011) – Today, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the Secretary of Health in Mexico honored the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Manuel Velasco Suárez Award for Excellence in Bioethics. The event also served as an opportunity to honor Dr. Velasco’s legacy and stress the important role bioethics, a field that examines advances in medicine and science in relation to ethical issues, plays in Latin American society. As recent progress has been made in stem cell research, organ transplants, and other controversial topics, bioethics has emerged as an important discipline.

Biotechnology: A key to improving the quality of life for patients with renal failure

• According to the Mexican Kidney Foundation, more than 100,000 people suffer from chronic renal failure in Mexico and 8.3 million have mild renal insufficiency

• About 37,642 people require ongoing dialysis treatment

• The National Transplant Center estimates that 5,000 transplants are needed annually and reported that in 2006, a total of 2,800 were performed

• Thanks to biotechnological medications, such as erythropoietin, patients with kidney problems may have a better quality of life
