PAHEF and PAHO Present the 2011 Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Health Literature Winner » Award Overview On Septembet 26, 2011, the article entitled Causes of the accelerated decline in child undernutrition in Northeastern Brazil (1986-1996-2006),published in volume 44 of Revista de Saúde Pública (2010), was selected to receive the 2011 Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Health Literature. The winning article, which was represented by lead author Dr. Ana Lucía Lovadino de Lima, was jointly presented at a special event in Washington, DC, by Dr. Benjamin Caballero, chair of the board of directors of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), and Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The publication is an analysis of data from population-based health surveys of children under five years of age in 1986, 1996, and 2006 in northeastern Brazil. Dr. Lovadino and four co-authors used sophisticated epidemiologic methods to conduct time-series analyses of five possible causes of improvements in child under-nutrition. The article addresses one of the Millennium Development Goals, and the results have important policy implications for the development and public health programs in the Americas and globally. The article has been cited over 20 times according to the Scopus database. “It is an honor to receive such a renowned international award, which magnificently encourages and represents public health literature at its highest level in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Dr. Lovadino de Lima. “Dr. Lovadino de Lima and her colleagues have presented an important contribution to the study of child nutrition that is beneficial to Brazil and beyond. PAHEF commends her and her colleagues for their work,” said Edward Kadunc, PAHEF president. PAHEF created the Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Health Literature in 1990 to recognize significant contributions to the body of health literature in the Americas and to promote the highest standards of research, specifically research that emphasizes regional impact in Latin America and the Caribbean. The award is one of six in the PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, which was established in 1975.
