Patricia P. Barry, MD, MPH


Dr. Patricia Barry is an adjunct professor of clinical internal medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. She recently retired from serving as the founder and Executive Director of the Merck Institute of Aging & Health in Washington, DC, which had a significant focus on improving the health care of older persons in Latin America.

She earned her bachelor's degree in chemistry from the College of William and Mary, medical degree at the University of South Florida College of Medicine where she also completed her postgraduate training in internal medicine, and master's in public health from Boston University. She held medical faculty appointments at the University of South Florida and the University of Miami, and was professor of medicine, chief of the geriatrics section of the department of medicine, and director of the Gerontology Center at Boston University.

Dr. Barry is a fellow and former president of the American Geriatrics Society and was the recipient of the Society’s 2006 Nascher/Manning Award for lifetime achievement in clinical geriatrics. She also recently received the 2007 Lila Wallis Women’s Health Award from the American Medical Women’s Association. She served on the geriatric test-writing committees of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and served on its Clinical Efficacy Assessment and Health and Public Policy Committees.

She currently volunteers as president of the advisory board for Graduate Studies in Arts and Sciences at the College of William and Mary and is a member of the board of directors of The Center for Excellence in Aging and Geriatric Health in Williamsburg.

Dr. Barry joined the board of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation in 2007. She became vice-chair of the PAHEF board in April 2008.

Dr. Barry signed a conflict of interest statement and agrees to abide by PAHEF's conflict of interest policy.
