PAHEF and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Launch New Program to Combat Rates of Childhood Obesity in Yucatán, Mexico
The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation today launched a new Health Promotion and Obesity Prevention program to address the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity in Yucatán, Mexico. During the initial phase of the program, PAHEF, working with several public and private partners and local community representatives, will implement a community-based participatory research project to study and develop a model program to combat the high rate of obesity among children in 13 Yucatán municipalities.

Search is on for the Malaria Champions of the Americas 2011: Integrated Approaches and Synergies in Efforts against Malaria.
On the occasion of World Malaria Day, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the George Washington University Center for Global Health (CGH) commence this year’s search for the Malaria Champions of the Americas. Currently on its third year, the annual search honors innovative efforts that have significantly contributed towards overcoming the challenges of malaria in communities, countries, or the Region.

Conference Highlights Mexico’s Leadership in Biotechnology and Cancer Matters
ABC Medical Center, its medical association, and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), have joined efforts to implement the workshop "The ABCs of Biotechnology." This synergy arises from the need to educate and deepen knowledge among health professionals directly involved with patients about the impact of biotechnology on human health and to demonstrate Mexico's leadership in the field.

PAHEF, PAHO, and the Secretary of Health in Mexico Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Manuel Velasco Suárez Award for Excellence in Bioethics with Event in Mexico City
The event also served as an opportunity to honor Dr. Velasco’s legacy and stress the important role bioethics, a field that examines advances in medicine and science in relation to ethical issues, plays in Latin American society. As recent progress has been made in stem cell research, organ transplants, and other controversial topics, bioethics has emerged as an important discipline.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is calling for nominations of scientific articles of significant impact on the public health literature in Latin America and/or the Caribbean for the 2011 Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Public Health Literature. The articles must have been published within the three years previous to the nomination in a scientific journal that is indexed in a medical database (e.g., PubMed, SciELO) or in the Pan American Journal of Public Health.
