Conference Highlights Mexico’s Leadership in Biotechnology and Cancer Matters

MEXICO D.F. (March 17, 2011)
– ABC Medical Center, its medical association, and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), have joined efforts to implement the workshop "The ABCs of Biotechnology." This synergy arises from the need to educate and deepen knowledge among health professionals directly involved with patients about the impact of biotechnology on human health and to demonstrate Mexico's leadership in the field.

"Biotech medications are proteins used in the treatment of various diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis, among many others, of which the development is based on living systems that have been modified through biotechnology and have a more complex molecular structure than traditional drugs. Since its production involves the use of living cells, this is a very delicate process. Thus, any small change to it can cause catastrophic consequences. Therefore, it is essential to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of these drugs by conducting pre-clinical studies and trials," said Dr. Gilberto Castañeda, senior researcher at the Center for Pharmacology Research and Advanced Studies at the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV, by its acronym in Spanish) and member of PAHEF’s Advisory Committee on Biotechnology.

"PAHEF has a deep commitment to bringing the latest health education information to the people of the Americas. We see the Safe Biotech Initiative as an important campaign to educate public policy makers, health workers, and patients about the issues surrounding the use of biotechnological medicines and biosimilars. It is our hope that this will aid in informed decision-making that leads to improved health outcomes and patient safety," said Edward Kadunc, president of PAHEF.

"The ABC Cancer Center, the first kind of private assistance institution in Mexico, is an example of leadership in biotechnology and cancer in the country. This event, in partnership with PAHEF, reaffirms our commitment to continue educating and demonstrating our leadership in cancer and biotechnology," explained Dr. Enrique Gómez and Dr. Eva Delia Calderon during the conference.

The development of these drugs aims to create new and increasingly-specialized therapies that are designed based on the specific characteristics and needs of the patient. The manufacturing process of biotechnological drugs takes place within the highest standards and quality controls, so they offer safety, efficacy, and are tested through quality control studies.

To this end, PAHEF has launched the Safe Biotechnology Initiative, a campaign that aims to educate physicians and patients about the immediate and long-term effects of biotechnology on human health, as well as the importance of biotechnology for Latin American societies.

ABC Medical Center, through its Cancer Center and biotechnological innovative projects, represents a high-tech alternative and an internationally-certified multidisciplinary medical team for timely and safe care of patients through non-aggressive innovative treatments. The Cancer Center, opened in early 2009, is the first high specialty center of its kind, structured as an Institution of Private Assistance (IPA).
