young-woman-with-book-for-wSince 1913, International Women’s Day (IWD) has been celebrated on March 8th. According to the IWD official website, it is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present, and future. Currently, IWD is an official holiday in 27 nations and celebrated annually in many more.

The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) donated $10,000 to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to support its IWD activities. PAHO is celebrating International Women’s Day at its headquarters in Washington, DC, and focusing on the theme, “Zero Transmission of HIV in the Americas: Gender, Cultural Diversity, and Human Rights.”

This year’s theme is supportive of UNAIDS´ agenda for the global HIV response which emphasizes efficiently using resources to reduce new infections. UNAIDS estimates that more than 550,000 women aged 15 and older are living with HIV/AIDS in Latin America.

During the event at PAHO, the winner of this year’s IWD competition will be announced. The competition’s theme is: Best Practices that Incorporate the Perspective of Gender Equality in Health—HIV Focus. Forty-two groups from 16 countries participated.

PAHEF is proud to support PAHO’s 2011 International Women’s Day efforts.
