Our recent contributions to the Americas include:

•    supporting the ProVac initiative, with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), to strengthen capacity in Latin American and Caribbean countries to make evidence-based, informed policy decisions regarding vaccine programs, with financing from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation;
•    facilitating curriculum exchanges between universities to bring leading health education courses to students in Latin America;
•    funding projects to reduce healthcare-associated infections at seven hospitals in Bolivia and supporting the work of the Bolivian National Institute of Health Laboratories (INLASA);
•    supporting a project to provide children in the Andes with specially-designed hats to protect them from the harmful effects of intense UV rays; and
•    working with PAHO to reinforce surveillance and knowledge of meningococcal disease in Latin America by working from a base in Argentina to support the work of 20 reference laboratories with a $1.2 million grant from Sanofi Pasteur.
