Funding Opportunity: Surveillance & Prevention of HAIs

Establishing Surveillance and Prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs)

Implementing an integrated program for the prevention and control of HAIs and judicious utilization of antimicrobials in Latin America and the Caribbean

Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are a major cause of morbidity and a serious cause of mortality among affected individuals in hospitals and healthcare delivery settings. In addition to patient pain and suffering, HAIs increase healthcare costs due to the need of extended hospital stays, additional drugs, and other diagnostic and therapeutic measures. HAIs also generate indirect costs from loss of productivity for the patient and society as a whole.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) have long recognized such problems and have undertaken relevant initiatives to prevent and control HAIs.

Such initiatives that guide us include the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Resolution WHA51.57, which urged Member States to create or strengthen surveillance systems to collect relevant laboratory and epidemiological data on HAIs. Additionally, PAHO has adopted a multifaceted approach in the Americas that includes epidemiological surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and prevention and control of HAIs.

PAHO will support national efforts to understand, prevent, and control HAIs, by launching, implementing, and evaluating a sustainable epidemiological surveillance program (“the HAI Project”) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The HAI Project will provide data on the incidence and consequences of HAIs. No data are available at this time to estimate the overall incidence of HAIs in most of LAC, and PAHO is fulfilling this important requirement. Accurate surveillance is a responsible form of research that allows key stakeholders to determine where the next investment is made.

This grant proposal requests, at minimum, an initial investment of $6,147,200 (US dollars) to provide a critical epidemiological surveillance program of healthcare associated infections in Latin America and the Caribbean.
