WASHINGTON, DC (March 1, 2010) – Nominations are being accepted for the Clarence H. Moore Award for Excellence for Voluntary Service now through June 30, 2010, 5:00 p.m. EST, at pahef.org/moore. This award, presented by the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), celebrates the achievements of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) with a high volunteer-to-staff ratio operating in Latin America and the Caribbean in public health. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the creation of the award.

Nominees must be a national or local nongovernmental organization operating in Latin America or the Caribbean whose work results in outstanding public health contributions.

The award also aims to encourage dedication to the highest standards of volunteerism and professionalism. The awardee receives a cash prize, certificate of merit, and a paid trip to Washington, DC, to receive the award at the annual PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Event and is recognized before the ministers of health of the region at the PAHO Directing Council Meeting.

The Clarence H. Moore Award for Excellence for Voluntary Service is part of the Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, a joint initiative of PAHEF and PAHO.

Nominations may be made in either Spanish or English.

Past winners of the Clarence H. Moore Award for Excellence for Voluntary Service include Argentina-based REDLACTRANS (Latin American and Caribbean Transgender Network), which won for its work to advance acceptance and human rights for transgendered people in the region. In 2008, Puente a la Salud Comunitaria was recognized for promoting food sovereignty while advancing the health and economic assurance for rural communities in Mexico.

Dr. Clarence H. Moore, an American, joined the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1947 as an administrative officer in Geneva, where he was instrumental in setting up the WHO regional office structure. He served as executive director and chief operating officer of PAHEF from its inception in 1968 until his death in 1988.
