Each year, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) present the following awards:
These awards honor dedicated professionals who led the way in advancing health conditions in the Americas during the last century. The awards stimulate the growth of the next and rising generation of leaders working together to improve health and health care in the Americas.
The Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program is a partnership between PAHEF and PAHO. For each award, a jury of distinguished public health professionals is convened to review the nominations and recommend a winning candidate to the board of directors of PAHEF for approval.
The awardee receives a cash prize or grant, certificate of merit, and is invited to Washington, DC, to receive the award at the annual PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Event. The event is held each September in Washington, DC, during the week of the PAHO Directing Council Meeting. More than 250 people attend the event, which is held at the historic Organization of American States (OAS) building in Washington. Attendees include ministers of health from throughout the Americas, OAS ambassadors, U.S. government officials, and private sector representatives who provide support to the event. The awardees also are recognized before the delegates to the PAHO Directing Council Meeting earlier that day.
100th Anniversary of Dr. Horwitz's Birth
2010 marked the 100th anniversary of Dr. Horwitz's birth, and in his honor PAHEF sponsored the re-publication of his most important articles. These were edited by Dr. Nevin Scimshaw in the Food and Nutrition Bulletin of the International Nutrition Foundation. PAHEF and PAHO also have commissioned a book on Dr. Horwitz which will be published in 2010 and is being prepared by Dr. Jorge Jiménez de la Jara of the Catholic University of Chile.
An independent jury of distinguished public health professionals, peers, and academics reviews nominations for the Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health, and recommends a candidate for each award to the Foundation's board of directors. PAHO and PAHEF appoint the members of the juries but have no involvement in the award selection process.
The cash awards the selected individuals receive are funded by either family members of the person for whom the award is named, by governments, or by PAHEF general funds.
The annual awards ceremony to recognize awardees is financially supported by contributions from the private sector, non-profit organizations, PAHO, and PAHEF.
