Through PAHEF support, the organization Associação Saúde Sem Limites examined the culture and life of the Hupd’äh indigenous people in four villages along the Tiquié River in Brazil with a holistic lens.
The analysis revealed that infectious and parasitic diseases, particularly intestinal infections of parasites, are the leading cause of illness. Slash and burn cultivation and polluted water contributed to low soil fertility and thus decreased food productivity.
Using the knowledge acquired through the analysis the Hupd’äh developed strategies at participatory workshops to improve their health and quality of life.
