More than 500 people have died, and many more have lost their homes as a result of the earthquake (MW 8.0) that struck off the coast of Peru on August 15.  The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) supports the recovery efforts of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to alleviate the devastating effects of this tragedy in Peru.

Four health facilities are reported destroyed, one hospital in Pisco, near the epicenter and three health centers in the province of Castrovirreyna, which is one of the poorest zones in Peru.  The ministry of health hospital in Pisco suffered severe damage to their emergency and surgical facilities. The most important regional hospital in Ica and the main hospital in Chincha can only partially operate due to the collapse of basic services. Seven specialized hospitals in Lima also suffered physical damage, especially in walls, prompting the evacuation of some services.
