Pedro Acha Award for Veterinary Public Health Presented in Peru

Lima, Peru (PAHO)— Dr. Paola Rosa Murillo Andrade was presented with the Pedro Acha Award, conferred annually by the Pan American Health and Education Foundation to support and encourage students in the veterinary and animal sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean to engage in veterinary public health research

The Award was for the thesis "Use of Sentinel Pigs in the Monitoring of Environmental Contamination with T. solium Eggs." Dr. Murillo is a graduate of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos in Lima.

The award, consisting of a certificate and a check for US$ 1,000, was presented to Dr. Murillo in the name of the Foundation by Dr. Marie Andrée Diouf, Representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Peru.

During the ceremony, Dr. Primo Arambulo III, Coordinator of the PAHO Program on Veterinary Public Health, spoke about the qualities and professional life of Dr. Pedro Acha, who for many years served in the PAHO Program on Veterinary Public Health as a public health veterinarian and expert in international health. Dr. Acha obtained his veterinary degree from the Universidad Nacional de San Marcos in Lima, Peru. He then pursued graduate studies on a fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation, which led to a master's degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley in the United States. He began his successful international career at PAHO.

Dr. Acha was a member of the secretariat of numerous FAO/WHO Expert Committees, including those on rabies, zoonoses, hydatidosis, brucellosis, and veterinary medical education. He also served as a technical adviser to international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations], UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and was on the Board of Directors of the Gorgas Memorial Institute of Tropical and Preventive Medicine.

The Award Ceremony was attended by representatives and educators from the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos, the University Cayetano Heredia, the Universidad Alas Peruanas; professional groups, such as the Colegio Médico Veterinario, the Veterinarians' Association, and the Peruvian Academy of Veterinary Sciences; and from the health and agriculture sectors.
