Around 13 million people live in Colombia’s rural areas, two million of whom live in unsafe areas where it is nearly impossible for them to access sophisticated medical treatments that are only available in the more complex hospitals of the larger cities. Through medically-equipped, small planes and pilots transporting voluntary physicians and paramedical personnel to remote regions of Colombia, Patrulla Aérea Colombiana–Antioquia (PAC-Antioquia) provides health services and programs to poor, rural families. This Medellín-based nonprofit organization was founded by pilots and health professionals in 1965.
In recognition of its outstanding voluntary health efforts particularly its attending to the health needs of the rural poor and persons displaced from armed conflict, PAC-Antioquia was awarded the
2003 Clarence H. Moore Award for Voluntary Service, one of five awards presented by the
Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, a partnership between the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
In 2007, PAC-Antioquia established a partnership fund with PAHEF to mobilize resources in the US. The PAC-Antioquia Fund will support the organization’s charitable health projects ranging from
- Programs geared to the promotion, protection, treatment, and recovery of patients living in areas with difficult access, such as the rain forest, shorelines, plains, and deserts.
- Delivery of medicines and more sophisticated health treatments that would otherwise not be accessible to populations living in remote areas of Colombia.
During 1996-2006, PAC-Antioquia performed more than 24,000 surgical procedures, (including 1,200 cataracts) and more than 73,000 specialized clinical consultancies in 198 rural health facilities in the departments of Antioquia, Arauca, Bolivar, Caldas, Caquetá, Cauca, Chocó, Cordoba, and Vichada.
On average, 1500 people in a remote population of 10,000 are in need of specialist medical services. During one medical mission, four PAC-Antioquia health professionals can provide as many as 18 surgeries and 45 clinical consultations. The cost of this type of mission is $7.142.
