2010-6-11 —Due to high interest from the public health community in the Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health, the call for nominations deadline for the Horwitz, Acha, Soper, and Moore awards has been extended.

2010-4-30 —The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) are proud to announce the creation of the Sérgio Arouca Award for Excellence in Universal Health Care. 2010-4-9—Nominations are being accepted for the Manuel Velasco Suárez Award for Excellence in Bioethics now through June 30, 2010, 5:00 p.m. EST, at pahef.org/mvs .

2010-3-1—Today, the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Ecuador announced that transmission of onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, has stopped in that country. 2010-1-10—The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) received a $360,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for a three-year project called “Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities,” to promote policy and environmental changes, community participation and development, and a multimedia campaign in healthy eating and active living in El Paso, Texas.

2009-11-16—To address childhood obesity throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is playing a prominent role at the SLAN (Latin American Society of Nutrition) Conference being held November 15 – 19, 2009, in Santiago, Chile. 

2009-6-11—Three organizations based in Colombia and Ecuador and a leading malaria expert from Mexico were honored today as “Malaria Champions of the Americas” during the celebration of the third annual Malaria Day in the Americas, held at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization.

2009-30-9—A nonprofit fighting for the rights of transgender people, a former minister of health from Peru, and a young, female scientist, were among the honorees at last night’s Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Awards ceremony and dinner.

2009-30-9—Last night, Dr. Eduardo A. Pretell Zárate, former Minister of Health of Peru (2000 – 2001) and recognized as the most prestigious expert on iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Latin America, received the esteemed Abraham Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health

2009-30-9—An Argentina-based transgender rights advocacy organization was honored last night with the prestigious Clarence H. Moore Award for Voluntary Service at the Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health event.

2009-26-9—Dr. Ilane Hernández Morales was honored last night with the Pedro N. Acha Award for Veterinary Public Health for her thesis “Preparation and Assessment of a DNA Vaccine Versus Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis Outer Membrane Protein A (OmpA) in Laying Hens.”

2009-26-9—A research paper reporting on the first large-scale study conducted in Mexico about youth suicide won the highly respected Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Health Literature last night.

2009-26-9—On World Contraception Day 2009, a coalition of ten international organizations with an interest in sexual health and the Youth Task Force*, launch one of the first ever multi-national surveys exploring young people’s attitudes towards sex and contraception. Results show that young people across Asia Pacific, Europe and North America are not communicating effectively about contraception.

2009-27-8—The Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Awards ceremony and dinner will be held Sept. 29 to honor people who have changed the face of public health and health care in the Americas. The awards are cosponsored by the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).


2009-3-12—The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), a not-for-profit organization in the United States, has announced the receipt of a $1,236,672 million grant from sanofi pasteur, the vaccines division of the sanofi-aventis Group. The purpose of the restricted grant is to reinforce surveillance and knowledge—based on laboratory evidence—of meningococcal disease in Latin America and the Caribbean Region over the next three years.

2008-12-4—On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is proud of the impact of its Global Violence Prevention project. The project has advanced awareness within the global health community that violence is preventable.

2008-9-29—Today the Pan American Health Organization and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation presented Dr. Cesar Victora of Brazil with the highly-coveted 2008 Abraham Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health for his outstanding dedication and contribution to maternal and child health in the Americas. The award was presented at the 48th Directing Council meeting of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) by the President of the Directing Council and Dr. Benjamin Caballero, Board Chair of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF).

2008-11-13 The Pan American Health and Education Foundation has information about a scholarship opportunity in May 2009 within the new Masters and Certificate Program in Vaccinology & Pharmaceutical Clinical Development in Siena, Italy. This program is sponsored by both the University of Siena, Medical School and Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics. 2008-9-26 The executive director of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), Mr. Edward Kadunc, participated in the launch of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day activities in the Americas at an event at the Asturiano Center in Mexico City. He joined the Sub-secretary for Prevention and Promotion of the Secretariat of Health and other dignitaries from both the public and private sector in affirming the need for youth to know about making informed choices about contraception and preventing unwanted pregnancies.

2008-4-3—PAHEF is pleased to join Harvard University’s Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation as a partner in the bi-annual conference Frontiers of Innovation: 20 Years of Innovation in Government held in Cambridge March 31st through today. On Monday evening, the executive director of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF), Mr. Edward Kadunc, discussed multisector partnerships in tackling neglected diseases and in disaster preparedness in the Americas with former President of Mexico, Vicente Fox; Harvard dignitaries; and conference keynote speakers.

2007-12-31 - The board of trustees of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation welcome Mr. Edward Kadunc as the new executive director. He comes to the foundation with 30 years of experience in international development, largely in Latin America.

2006-09-25 - Before high-level government health officials, ambassadors and other VIPs Pan American Health and Education Foundation board member, Dr. Frederick Naftolin handed the Abraham Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health to Dr. James H. Steele, former Assistant Surgeon General for Veterinary Affairs under Presidents Johnson and Nixon for the US Public Health Service for his outstanding contributions to veterinary public health in the Americas.
2006-04-03 - Health workers worldwide are focusing this year on the health of mothers and children in hopes that governments and the international community will commit to making their health a top priority. 2005-06-10 - The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) has received a $1.4 million grant from the Global Health Program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundationto support cervical cancer prevention efforts of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization in Peru, which has a high incidence of cervical cancer. 2005-09-26 - Today, before an international forum of high-level government health officials, ambassadors and other VIPs, a member of the board of trustees of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation presented a certificate of honor and cash prize to Dr. Ricardo Uauy and Prof. Patricia Sorokin.
