WASHINGTON, DC (January 15, 2010) – The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is accepting donations to support the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) at for relief efforts in Haiti. Donations can be made by credit card in amounts as small as $5 on PAHEF’s secure Web site.
These funds will be used to help PAHO support Haitian Ministry of Health to provide emergency health care by:

-         Providing medicine and medical equipment
-         Mobilizing trained health personnel
-         Establishing mobile clinics to treat the survivors

On the ground, the situation is dire. “Contributions to PAHEF will assist PAHO in reinforcing existing hospitals and setting up field hospitals. Eight medical facilities, including four hospitals, were damaged or destroyed by the earthquake. The first line of medical attention has been virtually destroyed,” said Edward Kadunc, executive director of PAHEF. “Helping the injured is top priority, but it’s very complicated to do when the local infrastructure is gone.”

The PAHO teams are faced with numerous obstacles including blocked roads and a lack of ability to communicate with others throughout Haiti. In the coming days, their priorities also will grow to include reestablishing health care services, communicable diseases control, providing mental health services, and ensuring the proper handling of  corpses.

To date, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation has supported a number of health projects in Haiti including: the purchase of mattresses for hospital beds, helping Justinian University Hospital in Cap-Haitien develop an integrated infection control and antibiotic utilization program, and a midwifery twinning project with the University of Miami School of Nursing to conduct an 18 month training of nurse midwives.

Founded in 1968, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is a public 501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to fostering public health programs in the Americas that address major health concerns. PAHEF improves the lives of people throughout the Americas by working with the public and private sectors as well as major public health research, policy, and development groups.

PAHEF enjoys a unique relationship with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization.
