“Our goal must be a world in which good health is a pillar of individual well-being, national progress, and international stability and peace. This cannot be achieved without partnerships involving governments, international organizations, the business community, and civil society.”

Preventing Violence: A Place on the Global Health Agenda

Did you know that among 15-44 year olds violence is a leading cause of death? In the Americas , 20-60% of households suffer from violence. PAHEF is helping to prevent violence such as this.

The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is making a grant of $50,000 to support the work of the World Health Organization. Documents on the Violence Prevention Alliance and other documents on violence prevention will be produced and then distributed to participants of the upcoming National Academies’ Institute of Medicine (IOM) workshop on Preventing Violence in Low and Middle Income Countries: Finding a Place in the Global Health Agenda  scheduled or June 26-27, 2007 in Washington DC . This grant is part of its Global Violence Prevention Advocacy Project. The IOM is a prestigious nonprofit organization that serves the US through its science-based advice on health, medicine, and biomedical science.

And there is even more good news! On March 27, 2007, Global Violence Prevention Advocacy was part of the Oprah and Friends radio program entitled "Passionate for Peace." It focused on people from throughout the US working to prevent and intervene in conflict.

Together we can do something about the 1.6 million violent deaths worldwide each year.
