“Our goal must be a world in which good health is a pillar of individual well-being, national progress, and international stability and peace. This cannot be achieved without partnerships involving governments, international organizations, the business community, and civil society.”

The Journal of Public Health Dentistry has recently published a favorable review of the oral health book funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation through the Pan American Health and Education Foundation, Promoting Oral Health: The Use of Salt Fluoridation to Prevent Dental Caries.

The reviewer praises the book for providing guidance in establishing salt fluoridation programs and reviewing previous research of such programs and summary data from almost all the countries in the Americas on prevalence and severity of dental cavities. Also he draws attention to the salt fluoridation program recommendations of the Pan American Health Organization, which are considered the “core content of the book.” The reviewer also finds that the chapter addressing salt fluoridation programs “provides compelling evidence of the dramatic effectiveness of salt fluoridation”— in Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Mexico. For example, the annual rate of severity of dental caries was reduced by 10% to 15%. Another chapter provides “excellent guidance regarding health education and health promotion” overall. In conclusion, the book is “a great reference for anyone interested in salt fluoridation” especially for policy-makers, administrators, academicians, and others in the fields of public health and dental public health.
